Roosevelt.

Early residential architecture with downtown Phoenix close at hand.

Explore the district’s homes and setting, then take a practical look at buying or selling here.

Put it in context

A district tied to the city’s early growth.

Roosevelt’s history includes its development as a streetcar suburb and its later relationship with downtown commerce and tourism. The Roosevelt Action Association describes a mix of California and Craftsman bungalows, Period Revival houses, apartments, and other early buildings. The variety makes the streetscape an important part of the district’s identity.

The city describes the historic district generally between McDowell Road, Fillmore Street, Central Avenue, and Seventh Avenue.

The Roosevelt Historic District, the broader Roosevelt neighborhood, and Roosevelt Row are different geographic descriptions. This page’s map follows the city’s historic-district boundary west of Central Avenue.

What to notice in the homes.

Roosevelt offers more than one building type or era. Look at the relationship among houses, apartment buildings, and the surrounding city.

01 / BUNGALOWS

The residential foundation.

California and Craftsman bungalows are documented in the district. Look closely at porches, rooflines, woodwork, and changes to the original plan.

02 / PERIOD REVIVAL

A range of design influences.

The association identifies several Revival styles. Read the home’s overall composition before deciding how later changes fit.

03 / EARLY APARTMENTS

Understand the whole building.

Apartments form part of Roosevelt’s history. Review the property type, ownership documents, and responsibilities that apply to the home you are considering.

04 / ADAPTATION & REUSE

Follow the building’s evolution.

An older building may have served more than one use. Establish the documented current use and review alterations alongside the original architecture.
